How to create the life of your dreams – Part 1

“Creating the life of your dreams” sounds cliché, I know. But I whole-heartedly believe in the power of consciously creating your lifestyle to reflect what you *really* want in this short life of yours.

So here’s my no-BS guide to actively and consistently creating the life of your dreams.

This step-by-step guide is based on the steps I’ve taken myself to actively do this in my own life. Take what resonates with you, leave the rest.

Before we begin, let’s get a few things very clear:

  • only you know what the “life of your dreams” really looks like.
  • the “life of your dreams” really means your average day.
    (Because the average day is what makes up the entirety of your life.)


1) Take stock of everything your daily life currently encompasses: the people, the places, the conversations, the story, the message, how you spend your time etc…

2) Be brutally honest with yourself about what you truly desire to experience in your life. This is often the hardest, and most important part. What do you *really* want?

3) Compare and contrast between these two lists, and identify what’s missing from your current daily life that you’re craving more of.

4) Decide for yourself if it’s worth making changes for. Because here’s the thing: change takes time, and it’s hard. It requires a lot of effort to dedicate and commit yourself to creating long-term change in your life, and a lot of faith to carry you along the way. So you need to decide whether or not you think it’s worth fighting for.

5) Once you’ve decided you’re in it to win it, you need a game plan. You need to identify what changes need to be made so that your life can slowly but surely be a better reflection of what you really want.

6) Make the changes bravely, courageously, and without looking back. Implement some kind of system or routine to make sure that you follow through with these changes! (if you want to hear more about my systems and routines, let me know in the comments)

  1. Woah! this is something I have been thinking about for a few days, maybe even weeks and your step 2 and three have been on my to do list. I suppose universe is giving me that extra nudge through you to get it done! 🙂
    I think the hardest step would be step six. I find it very difficult to stick to routines for long term. I don’t think I have ever had a routine longer than a month. But hey, if something needs to get done, it gets done.

    First, THANK YOU for your candor in sharing this post. I enjoyed reading it thoroughly and it’s obvious that it is coming from a genuine place in your heart. About your questions.. I’m struggling with aspects of this topic at the moment because being one’s own boss comes with it’s peaks and valleys and huge responsibility (which I’m fine with most of the time) and how I respond to it all doesn’t just effect me but also my family. So that said, the easiest step towards living the life of my dreams would be (1) taking stock & the hardest would be (4).

    At the moment on a scale from one to ten my average day is a 5 in comparison to what my ideal average day should be.

    I guess I need to decide what aspects I can live with and which need to change.


  3. This post was exactly what I needed today! I’m currently in the process of figuring things out. Just got out of a two year relationship and now I’m facing a lot mix of feelings and emotions and I truly need to take control of my own life and be happy with myself before I can be happy with anyone else.

    My life pretty much revolves around my job and I’ve noticed that I leave little to no time for myself so that would be a 3 for me. I’m working on that.

    The easiest thing for me is planning, the hardest is doing but I already started so that’s good

  4. Thank you so much for your ideas and comments. I am coming off of a 30 year career that through a corporate take over was layed off. At age 60 I found employment very difficult to find and so I went for my dream of having my own business. To answer your questions, what I’m finding lacking in my average day is smiling and laughing. The stresses of trying to make my business work is constant and even though I love what I’m doing it is my only focus. I haven’t found a way to get done what I need to and enjoy my family like I should.
    On my scale I would say while working my career it was a 4. Now with my business maybe a 6.

    After I watched your Newsletter Masterclass (if you’re reading this and you haven’t seen it go sign up at STAT! #LifeChanging) I embarked on this massive journey to figure out who I am and what I want.

    It turns out I want A LOT.
    But I struggle cutting back on what I don’t absolutely love. I want to be great at everything even while I know there is a lot of power in specificity and simplicity.

    BTW I can hear your voice in my head as I read this–you have such a great, unique writing and speaking voice!

  6. I’m in the process of change and I think the last point is the hardest for me. Especially when you say to move forward without looking back, because I feel that even if the best is forward I still hesitate and I don’t fully accept the change yet, so it happens that when I take a step forward I take a few steps back and it’s exhausting honestly. I self-sabotage myself all the time !

    1. Alessia I struggle with looking back, too!
      I’ve started a new blog to go with a new business (yay!) BUT I keep looking back at the blog I used to have. In fact, I haven’t deleted that old blog or really cut off from planning for it. 😛

  7. Hi Alex, I would love to hear about the systems and routines you use! Especially, structuring your days and sticking to a schedule when you’re working from home as a freelancer. I’m finding myself having more difficulties with motivation when my bed is so comfy and I have no boss to fire me … 😀

  8. Hi beautiful Alex, one thing that my average day would consist of is being at the gym, driving and travelling to at least one event/interview (actually that’s three things hehe)! 7 out of 10! I’m doing some of the things that I love and dream of doing but I wish to do so much more. 2 easiest and number 6 is the hardest as I sometimes know what I want to achieve but I don’t know how to make it happen or I keep waiting for external help that doesn’t come (like Prince Charming lol).
